The study content grants universal knowledge that enables the graduates to be flexible in different organizations and, at the same time, reflects the needs of the employment market.
MIAS offers accredited bachelor’s, master’s and PhD study programmes. Its offer also includes study programmes within the framework of lifelong learning. This part –time study is intended mainly for graduates from Czech and foreign universities. Our main fields are economic and management education, engineering pedagogy and language education.
Currently the institute has more than 1,300 students. Every year 500 students are admitted – 300 students into the bachelor’s programmes and 200 students into the follow-up master’s programme.
MIAS employees and lecturers are engaged in international research programmes as well as in national programmes and projects supported by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic and other institutions.
Aims of the institute
- To develop pedagogic and research activities and expand professional education in the fields of economic and management education, engineering pedagogy and language education.
- To create an inspiring study and working environment for our students and employees.
- To create a platform for meeting and interacting with experts from different scientific disciplines.
- To support cooperation with CTU faculties as well as with other Czech and foreign universities and colleges, industrial enterprises, state administration institutions and prominent Czech and foreign experts.
- To involve students from our master’s and PhD programmes in the research activities of our institute.
In 1990 the Academic Senate of CTU approved the foundation of The Masaryk Institute of Advanced Studies. MIAS was founded by the memorandum of association on April 9, 1992. The first director of the institute was doc. Ing. Jan Petr, DrSc. (a graduate and lecturer of the Faculty of Civil Engineering).
MIAS’s main fields were, apart from MBA programmes, commercial management and language courses for enterprises and the general public and engineering pedagogy for graduates from technical universities. Thus the sphere of competence at MIAS had three dimensions – the main fields were engineering pedagogy, management education, and language studies. These have been the main MIAS activities up to the present time.
The first MIAS department was the Department of Engineering Pedagogy, whose lecturers included several employees from the former Research Institute of Engineering Pedagogy of CTU in Prague. The two main organizational parts of this research and pedagogic institute were the department of methodology and pedagogy and the department of audiovisual technology. The department of audiovisual technology also focused on the development and construction of audiovisual technology and the possibilities of its use in effective teaching. Educational programmes and films, including research films for the university, were created. The tradition of engineering pedagogy at CTU dates back to 1961.
At the beginning of the 1990s MIAS started cooperation with Sheffield University (later Sheffield Hallam University). With this strategic partner from abroad MIAS started offering a Master’s degree in Business Administration. Most of its students were recruited from among top managers and entrepreneurs. The language of instruction during the first years was English. However, in the post-revolution years there were not enough students with a high standard of English. It was also necessary to provide quality language training. Thus in 1994 MIAS was joined by JASPEX, a prestigious provider of language education with many years of experience. Nowadays there are more than 600 graduates with an MBA degree from the Masaryk Institute of Advanced Studies.
In 2005 MIAS offered its first accredited master’s programme specializing in economy and management. The study programme Entrepreneurship and Commercial Engineering in Industry with a single course Entrepreneurship and Management in Industry was accredited in cooperation with the University of Economics in Prague. Since then MIAS has offered accredited study programmes focusing on management and economy.
The director of the Masaryk Institute of Advanced Studies doc. Ing. Jan Petr, CSc. died on January 29, 2007. In the same year a new director was elected – prof. Prof. Ing. Vladimír Kučera, DrSc., Dr.h.c., who had previously worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the head of the Centre for Applied Cybernetics at CTU, and a researcher at the Institute of Information Theory and Automation at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
In 2009 and 2010 MIAS developed further, and more study programmes were added to its existing portfolio. At present MIAS offers four bachelor’s study programmes, three master’s programmes and two PhD programmes. The long-term goals of MIAS are a further improvement of accredited study programmes along with the development of commercial management and language courses for the general public.
